Very thorough season preview by... The New York Times?!
Posted 6/26/2009
"New York City?!" Yeah, that's what I thought too. Who knew anybody working for the New York Times knew this much about college football, let alone about MSU football? Very, very nice piece. Thanks to form member "garnth" for the [article]

Meet our new head coach: Dan Mullen
Posted 12/11/2008
We've got a new head coach--Dan Mullen. Previously he was the offensive coordinator and QB coach at Florida. So is it being to optimistic to hope that we'll finally have some semblance of an offense next year? Welcome to the family, Coach Mullen. We wish you all the success in the world for both your sake and ours! [article]

Chris Peterson not interested in the job
Posted 12/6/2008
Boise State coach Chris Peterson says he's not interested in the vacant Mississippi State head coaching position. Or this article makes it sound like he isn't. He says, "Mississippi State has not offered me the head coaching position. I normally do not comment on coaching positions at other schools, but felt I needed to do so in this situation." Why does that sound like all the other "denials" I've seen in the past? In other words, the polite way of saying, "Don't bother me right now; you'll find out when I'm ready to tell you." Or is that just wishful thinking on my part? [article]

Breaking news: Coach Croom resigns
Posted 11/29/2008
I really didn't see this one coming. Coach Croom has resigned.

I'm kinda torn about it. On one hand he was an outstanding individual who stuck to his principles in building the program the right way. On the other hand he stuck with an offensive coordinator who didn't seem to have a clue about how to move the ball. If we had any offense whatsoever we'd be bowling again this year.

The biggest impact will be on recruiting. We need better talent; that much is obvious. Let's hope we find a coach who can attract the best in-state talent as well as shore up our offense.

Good luck, Coach Croom. Thank you for fixing a Mississippi State program that was in tatters before you came. [article]

Coach Croom talks up our chances this year
Posted 7/18/2008
Bless you, Coach Croom. You have a very positive outlook, and that's probably what will take this team to greatness. In his speech at the Central Mississippi State Extravaganza, he speaks very optimistically about our chances of actually challenging for the West. If we build on last year there's no doubt that we will be competitive, but there are some giant mountains to climb in the SEC (*cough* LSU *cough*). Great to hear positive remarks coming from our coaching staff though. I'm excited to see what the new guys can contribute to this team's effort. [article]

HUGE screen to be installed at Scott Field
Posted 7/3/2008
No more complaining about not being able to see the instant replay when you're at the games, folks. According to this report, the largest high definition screen in the SEC will be installed at Scott Field, ready for action by October 2008. Noice! Thanks, Will, for the [article]

A program in ascension
Posted 12/30/2007
As great as it was for our team to register a winning season and go to a bowl game, this is just the beginning according to Coach Croom. Coach Croom has always aimed high, talking of championships, and this season will hopefully be a good stepping stone toward that goal. [article]

MSU 10 - UCF 3
Posted 12/30/2007
It was an ugly, ugly game, but we won it in the end, which makes the ugliness much more bearable. 8-5--what a year! Thanks to Coach Croom and the coaching staff and players for making this a special season. [article]

UCF coach George O'Leary doesn't mind the cowbells, and practically encourages MSU fans to bring them. So bring them already! See y'all at the game! [article]

Music City Bowl for us?
Posted 11/26/2007
ESPN.com seems to think so. Click the link and scroll down to the section entitled "Sifting Through The Bowls". I'll go ahead and brag on myself, because I drew up this scenario in a forum post before the article was up on their site. Anybody know how I could get paid to shoot the breeze about college football? 'Cuz I'd be awesome at it. And I'm good looking. Complete package, some might say. [article]

20 Mississippi players caught stealing, put on "probation"
Posted 11/20/2007
20 U of M players were caught stealing items from their hotel rooms--clocks, pillows, etc. No, this is not a joke. And of course, all of them will be available to play on Friday in the Egg Bowl. Priceless!!! [article]

Arkansas 45 - MSU 31

500 yards of offense in a losing cause--unbelievable. Too many turnovers and not enough defense. We battled hard, but 4 turnovers are hard to overcome. [article]

Great story about Croom and our program
Posted 11/17/2007
Ron Higgins of the Commercial Appeal has written a terrific article for ESPN about Coach Croom and our program--what they've been through and how they got where they are now. It's great to have the media acknowledge that not only are we winning, but Coach Croom has gotten us to this point the right way without cutting corners. This is a must-read. MSU 17 - Alabama 12
Posted 11/12/2007
We're bowl eligible!!! I was on assignment on Saturday and couldn't be at the game, so even though it's old news by now I wanted to post it anyway. I think we'll need 7 wins to guarantee a bowl, but for now we can savor the feeling of being bowl eligible for the first time in 7 years! [article]

Bama game sold out; kickoff time set for Arkansas
Posted 11/6/2007
Was there ever any doubt that this game would sell out? We're within 1 win of becoming bowl eligible, and Alabama is coming to town. With the way the SEC is shaping up and all the other bowl eligible or almost eligible teams out there, we might need 7 wins to clinch a bowl, in which case we'll really need this win.

Also in news, the Arkansas game is the next Saturday at 1:30PM, no TV. [article]

Article about our QB situation
Posted 11/3/2007
It's not a full article--it's a part of a composite article about various topics in college football--but if this were a newspaper they probably would've broken it out into one. It describes how well true freshman QB Wesley Carroll has played for us, keeping everybody else including original starter Mike Henig out of the starting job. Might as well read something about MSU while "enjoying" our bye week today. [article]

Kentucky 14 - MSU 31
Posted 10/28/2007
What a great win! This game was the most enjoyable game I've watched us play in a long time. We were well in control for most of the game, and never really looked in danger of losing. Offense, defense, and special teams all played near perfect games--this was no fluke of a win. Great work, guys! [article]

If you have DirecTV and the sports package, you can watch the game against West Virginia tonight at 10:00 p.m. on channel 626 (MASN). You'll know the score already by then, but at least you'll get to watch the game too.

Man, it looked dicey there for a while trailing 10-3 for a long time and 13-9 at the end of the 3rd quarter, but the boys got it together in the 2nd and pulled it off. 4-2 -- not bad at all. [article]

Spotlight on DE Jimmy Holmes
Posted 9/28/2007
A lot of us were concerned about the defense coming into the season, particularly on the line where we lost a bunch of starters. Juco transfer DE Jimmy Holmes has done a lot to shore up the defensive line, making key plays and providing solid backup for Titus Brown and Avery Hannibal. He's originally from South Carolina, so the game this weekend will be a homecoming of sorts for him. [article]

MSU's 2 RB system working wonders
Posted 9/28/2007
Undoubtedly, RB Anthony Dixon is the feature back, but RB Christian Ducre is no slouch either. They run with different styles that complement each other, and make for a strong backfield tandem. They'll probably need to carry the offense again on Saturday against South Carolina. [article]

Spotlight on Shane Beamer
Posted 9/28/2007
Shane Beamer left MSU this year to coach at South Carolina. It's good to read that he has good impressions of his time in Starkville (even met his wife there!), and still has strong ties to the school. Good luck, Shane, but not this Saturday. [article]

msstatefootball.com is an unofficial MSU football fansite run by true MSU football fans. It is made by the people, for the people, and out of people... or something like that. It is not officially affiliated with Mississippi State University. The views expressed on msstatefootball.com are solely those of msstatefootball.com and not those of Mississippi State University.

By the way, I guess you could call this site a blog, although I started the site way before blogs were cool. I'm just putting the term "blog" in here so people searching for something like "Mississippi State football blog" can find this site :)
